The humble work ute - which tread pattern will best suit your vehicle?

Let’s face it, they’re everywhere! The humble work ute has become a crowd favourite and for good reason. They come from every leading brand on the planet these days including; Toyota, Ford, Nissan, Holden, Mitsubishi and Volkswagen. The work ute has become one of the most versatile vehicles on the road today.

Utes can handle a solid week on the tools, then take the family on a remote camping trip to Fraser Island. It really is the car that can do it all but what about tyres? What tyres are out there that can keep up?

All-Terrain Tyres.

These days we are definitely not short on tyre options for the everyday work utility. The popular All-Terrain tyre comes in many sizes from an array of top leading brands including Pirelli, Falken, Cooper, Maxxis and BFGoodrich. It’s pretty easy to get lost in making the right decision.

You just have to ask yourself, “what kind of driving am I honestly going to be doing?”

After a solid working week in the city or suburbs, you’re just itching to get out and be adventurous. Taking to the tracks every weekend, the All-Terrain tyre might just be the right tyre for you.

All-Terrain tyres were designed to fill that gap between Highway and Mud-Terrain tyres. Mud-Terrains can be very noisey, wear extremely fast and aren't really suitable for mid town driving.

With an All-Terrain tyre, you get a much longer life span but also an aggressive tyre that can handle just about any situation out on the tracks. From rock, mud and sand, there is not much the All-Terrain tyre can’t handle.

Recommended All-Terrain Tyres

  • BFGoodrich T/A KO2
  • Falken Wildpeak A/T3
  • Maxxis A/T
  • Toyo Open Country A/T

Highway Tyres

The highway tyre comes standard on most work utilities these days and so you really don’t have to look for any upgrades. However, if you are looking for a set of replacements, there are a number of great tyres from the leading brands that will go that extra mile!

If you’re looking to stay on sealed roads with perhaps a small amount of gravel road driving, then a Highway tyre could be the perfect tyre for you.

Highway tyres are designed with tighter tread patterns. This results in a much quieter tyre but also a tyre that will last a lot longer than your typical All-Terrain tyre.

Recommended Highway Tyres

  • Dunlop Grandtrek AT20 H/T
  • Yokohama G91 H/T
  • Kumho Crugen H/T
  • Toyo Open Country H/T
